RSS Feeds
Really Simple Syndication, or RSS, is a XML-based format for content syndication. It has been used extensively at various news sites such as BBC and CNN to "push" news headlines to their readers. By subscribing to the RSS news feeds through RSS readers that run locally on readers' machines, they can get news updates periodically right on their desktop without going to the news websites.
Recently RSS has been picking up by other types of websites to notify their users of their latest changes. Some of these sites are listed below:
Personal Blogs
Community Forums (e.g. Slashdot)
Newsletters for governments and institutes
Customized search services (e.g. Craig's list)
Currently NEEDS/Engineering Pathway provides a RSS feed for the latest 10 additions to our collection. Users can subscribe to this RSS feed to be notified of any new resources that being cataloged. Other websites can also digest this feed and display the titles and links to these new resources on their pages. We are also considering to expand our RSS feed capability beyond just notifications of changes in our collection.
Some other possiblities of using RSS feeds are notifications of new results for personalized searches, latest reviews and comments for resources stored in user's workspaces, newsletters and news from Engineering Pathway, and new resource recommendations for the users. Are there any kind of content/news updates that may of interest to users of Engineering Pathway or collections/services within engineering education?
